Hardcore punk isn't supposed to be surprising anymore. King Kong covering Judas Priest is nearly the standard sound. But on a good new compilation, Twin Cities Hardcore: Bring It Together (TCHardcoreJournal.com), one group's holler is more blurt than growl. "In high school I was a punching bag/When I got out, I was a punching fag/You fuck with me, man, I will fuck with you back/I ain't gonna fall between no crack." These lines, from the singer of Ass, come during a sort of funk breakdown, with the band going silent for each verse. Then the messy groove lunges forward again, and the other boys (and girl) join in on the cheerleading chorus, which spells out the title "A.S.S.K.I.C.K.A.T.R.O.N." Though this gimmick has its limits, the song stays with you because lead vocalist Jim Ass is so bizarre. He contorts his delivery as if to sound crazy/threatening, but it's a geek's macho, which gives the bash-back anthem humanity. In concert, after this tune, the band veers back into Cookie Monster vocals and minor-key crunch, leaving one to wonder whether the song was a fluke. But they're good enough to grow, and growl with the best of them, too.

BIAS DISCLOSURE: I HATE Sick of It All. They're music is boring and jocky, and when I saw them in LA when I was in high school, they responded to audience jeers by calling the hecklers "faggots". Lame Lame Lame. AFI was also on the bill and I actually welcomed their appearance after living through SOIA.

Sometime in the early nineties, when the corporate punk explosion was just beginning to ignite, Born Against challenged Sick of It All to a debate on NYU radio. The issues revolved around SOIA's decision to sign to In Effect, a subsidary of EastWest/Atlantic. In Effect's releases were distributed by Important, a subsidary of CBS. This led to SOIA deleting some words from their lyric sheets so their records could get into the KMarts of the midwest. Born Against, pseudo-anarchists they are, cried sell out.

That's about all the background you need before listening to the debate, for the next 37:14 of your life will be spent spinning in rhetorical circles with the obviously frustated and bored NYU DJ. The meta-commentary every time someone curses is also hilarious, given the debate's main subject, and the "No blood, no blood" ending is totally worth it. Hope you enjoy, and remember:

Hank Earl Carr (not Joseph Lee Bennett): shoots his child in the head, kills two police officers, takes a clerk hostage, accepts two telephone interviews with Florida media, shoots himself in head. Cameras capture everything, the story spirals out of control faster than it can be reported.

Haunting audio of WFLA's Don Richards basically listening to Hank rattle off a statement and foretell his own suicide. I promise I'll put up music tomorrow.

woody appreciation

The last thing Woody Guthrie recorded before his health made it impossible to continue writing and recording were children's songs. The last thing he recorded before that was a proto-concept album about two Italian anarchists who had been wrongfully-convicted and executed 20 years earlier.

I don't have any children's songs for you, but I do have a few from "Ballads of Sacco and Vanzetti," because it's probably the most interesting collection of songs by him that I've heard. He mangles his words and fumbles over guitar chords frequently, tells their story several different ways and from some different perspectives, gets Pete Seeger to sing a Sacco's death row letter to his son, and generally gives the impression that he had to get these songs out there and out there fast... which is weird, because of the time between the trial (1920) and this recording(1945-6). Maybe he thought that the Democracy-uber-alles mood of 1946 America required an historical slap in the back of the head from the very recent past, I don't know. In any case, I think it's what real music reviewers usually call "urgency."

T.D. Mischke: your best bet for making your advertising dollars do something besides create a boring ad for your stupid store or product. An ad on the Mischke Broadcast is an investment in a dying form of absurd wordplay and stream-of-consciousness sales. Personally, I'd probably never actually shop at a place like R.F. Moeller or The Spectacle Shoppe, but I won't hesitate to recommend them to friends who are looking for that sort of thing.

I'm tempted to just post more Mischke, but we'll return from the commercial break tomorrow or later tonight if I'm feelin' frisky.
