Johnny's Gonna Die

Here is 10:48 of Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers dealing with a range of topics, including the dynamics of group interaction, the chords to "Wipeout," and complex racial identity issues. Mostly, however, its the massive amounts of heroin they no doubt ingested during the intermission they've just returned from that dominates the performance.

I should add that this was intended to be used in a 1982 documentary about junkies called Gringo, but, since Johnny neglected to play any of the songs the director requested, it was released separately as a concert film and an ROIR session. Johnny was also filmed in the 14 different stations of the cross, but before they could crucify him he passed out and was taken away by paramedics. GO JOHNNY GO

SO MANY

My, we've been busy beavers today, haven't we? I'd almost feel embarassed to only be offering one track today, but this one's a killer.

One of my favorite vocal treating techniques that does not get used often enough is the ring modulator. Before this, my top use of it was on the first song of the United States Of America album (which I will post later this week if someone doesn't do it before me.) But this album by Annette Peacock, I'm The One is FULL of it, plus some pretty singing and the occasional Patty Waters-esque freakouts. Here's the title track.

Annette Peacock - I'm The One.mp3

Plain White T's

Dem Franchize Boyz - White Tee
Crime Mob - Stilettos (Pumps)

Generic crunk about generic fashion items. I don't think any brand names are mentioned at all.

I sort of feel like having an Andy Rooney moment and asking, "WHHHYY is it that all the young negros I see walking around the city these days all wear their pants below their bottoms and long white t shirts twelve sizes too big? Why, many of them are criminals. Doesn't this make it hard to run from the police?* And, whats the appeal of the metal teeth? My teeth chew just fine with out metal pieces clinking together every time I bite down. And another thing...."

...but I won't, cause that would be stupid. Besides, if you listen to their song, Dem Franchize Boyz tell you all you need to know anyway:

I slang in my white tee
I bang in my white tee
All in the club spitting game in my white tee
I bling in my white tee
Serve fiends in my white tee
fuck a throwback i look clean in my white tee

*Hypothetical Andy Rooney would actually have a point there-this does happen

Gloomy in triplicate

The versions I have found of GS fall into four rough categories: orchestral/vocal jazz, techno remix, folk or acoustic, and, uh, 'experimental.' I'm trying to avoid the techno remixes until I absolutely have to (they're mostly terrible and not in that good way we love here), so here is two weeks worth of gloom, plus a bonus offering, each song from the other categories.

Christian Death - Gloomy Sunday
Rick Nelson - Gloomy Sunday
Paul Whiteman w/Johnny Hauser - Gloomy Sunday

Remember when I replaced my 'sexy' post with a 'disco' post...

...well now I'm replacing nothing, simply offering up a 'sleazy' post.

Sleazy Surf -- Side 1
Sleazy Surf -- Side 2

I've provided the entire LP but have listed no track names. You don't need them. I SAID YOU DON'T NEED THEM DON'T EVEN GOOGLE 'SLEAZY SURF'!

LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE MISSED GLOOMY SUNDAY

Where are you, Matt?

Oh well, here's something strange.

IMPOSSIBLY DEEP

Here's a subtly catchy little tune that you may be ashamed to find in your head at an inappropriate moment. For that, I am sorry, but just be glad you (probably) don't own Racially Yours by The Frogs.

Paul Robeson - That's Why Darkies Were Born.mp3

SUMMER SOLSTICE SOON

Not much substance today, just a straight head-knodder.

Jorge Ben - Xica Da Silva.mp3

BOY WONDER

I LOVE YOU (and Frank Zappa)

Burt Ward (arr: Frank Zappa) - Boy Wonder, I Love You.mp3

(credit should go to mondodaddykin.blogspot.com. I have this 45 but dude has the whole SESSION available with even stranger songs.)

Less than three minutes of kickback

To illustrate how this song by a Scottish jazz group about a place in Luxembourg makes me feel, I've chosen this photo of a Korean shoreline. Breezy drums, whistling, flutes, over in 2:33 so it's impossible to get sick of.

Bill Wells Octet - Wiltz.mp3

Proto-gansta Rhapsodies.

Look at Jelly Roll Morton. Look at that smiling face. Makes you wonder what he's got to grin about when he sings a seven part ballad dedicated to crime, castration, prison, love, hate and gay sex. Oh, that Jelly Roll! What a cad!

The Murder Ballad, pt. 1
The Murder Ballad, pt. 2
The Murder Ballad, pt. 3
The Murder Ballad, pt. 4
The Murder Ballad, pt. 5
The Murder Ballad, pt. 6
The Murder Ballad, pt. 7

[The metronome becomes less annoying with each play.]

Tardy Sunday

Today was not a gloomy sunday, so I missed sending out the weekly gloom.

Evan Dando is this week's choice. There seems to be very few Dando/Lemonheads live bootlegs that do not have a version of this song. Here's one picked at random.

Remember when I said my sexy post was coming soon...

...well I've decided to replace 'sexy' with 'disco.'

This song sung by Chicago DJ superstar, Steve Dahl, played constantly throughout the PBS Disco Demolition documentary. After watching it I could not get it out of my head. I had to have it but had a hell of a time trying to track down the mp3 and the Dr. Demento comp it was on. Finally I caved and PAID $3.99 for the 45. But now it gives me great joy to know that should someone ever be looking for this song they will not have to spend hours perusing the deep web as I did. I have done all the work for them [unless we're not getting indexed by search engines then this is all for naught]!

Do You Think I'm Disco

What's happening baby? How the heck are you?

*I have a Gloomy Sunday cover by Marianne Faithfull but I refuse to subject you nice people to it.*

Dritten

The first two were the sort of "classic" way of doing this song, so here's something completely different:

(Negator)

Düsterer Sonntag!
