AN ALMOST TOTALLY ORPHANED RECORDING

MICHAEL YONKERS

A few years ago, this man's drone-psych record, Microminiature Love was reissued by Destijl Records. It was subsequently picked up by Sub Pop and is easily findable on CD.

Not so easy to find is his country record. I only recently discovered its existence. There's a brief blurb on his outdated and crappy offical web site about this record and two others being available from the guy who runs Destijl, but he's probably selling expensive original copies.

This is my favorite song from Michael Lee Yonkers (see how easy it is to go country... just toss Lee into your professional name.)

SUNDAY YOUTUBE

Freddie and The Dreamers: just one of the many arguments for a) why the Beatles ruined music and b) why punk rock needed to happen. As far as I know, Freddie stopped doing this dance (cleverly called "The Freddie") soon after this single, but the backup dancers are still doing it in this clip:

The sun's over the horizon.

While rifling through my car door pockets I came across many neglected CDs damaged from years of prolonged exposure to heat and scratched to oblivion. There was one CD, however, with the words 'UPRIGHT CB GUY' written in faded marker on its yellowed surface that did still play.

As some of you may have guessed the Upright CB = Upright Citizen's Brigade, a sketch comedy show that played on Comedy Central a few years back. The show never impressed me but what did impress me was Brigade member Matt Besser's ability to turn an irritating situation into comedy album gold.

About his comedy record May I Help You [Dumbass]?:

Every day for a year, Matt Besser answered around a dozen "wrong number" phone calls made to his apartment. These strangers believed they were calling a technical support operator in Houston, Texas, but actually they had neglected to dial the 1 before the area code. Instead of instructing his fellow Manhattanites of the honest mistake they had made, he decided to help them with their computer problems and record their phone calls. Just to make sure that what goes around comes around.

And remember, they called him.

My favorite track [I've been attempting to duplicate his impression for a week now]:

Matt Besser - Jimmy Stewart

Just in time for the local temp here to dip into the low 50's, we find Canned Heat rocking out for a bunch of famous "mice."
